which is really dumb when you think about it. You spend so much time with a person and if it doesn't work out you just lose the person you spent a big chunk of your life like it never existed.
That is true but in my experience... the quote is true too. I can think of only one ex of mine that I still consider a "friend" and I hardly talk to him and it took me like maybe five years to get to the point where I did consider him a friend. Guys I've just casually dated but didn't get serious with, sure; I'm friends with several of those. But love? No, it just doesn't work out. When I was younger I had illusions that it would but it was disaster after disaster and sometimes ended up hating the person more because of stuff that happened post-breakup during the "friends" time than stuff that happened during the breakup or the relationship.
